Nordic Semiconductor announced that Tsingoal (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd., a provider of ultra-wideband (UWB) precision ranging and positioning solutions, has selected Nordic’s nRF52833 Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth®). Low Energy/Bluetooth LE) advanced multi-protocol system-on-chip (SoC) device provides processing power and wireless connectivity for its “TSG5162” system-in-package (SiP) module.

TSG5162 integrates nRF52833 SoC and UWB radio frequency unit, a four-channel switching device and two crystal oscillators four-channel type equipment. TSG5162 is designed to meet the multi-antenna and small package requirements of FiRa-compliant UWB and Bluetooth low energy interaction and ranging, while also realizing the Bluetooth AOA location service function. The module is packaged in a 7 x 7mm QFN package and is designed for smart home ranging lateral and Internet of Things (IoT), consumer product positioning and location awareness applications around the mobile phone ecosystem. By combining low-power Bluetooth and UWB technology, the accuracy of its position and distance measurement far exceeds that of using either technology alone.

The integrated Nordic SoC radio has all Bluetooth direction finding functions, and its large-capacity memory (512kB flash memory and 128kB RAM) can support the receiver and transmitter roles of AoA and Angle of Emitter (AoD) applications. nRF52833 SoC is a Bluetooth 5.2 solution. In addition to the direction finding function, it also includes 2Mbps transmission rate, long distance, eight times the broadcasting capability, advertising expansion and channel selection algorithm (CSA#2) functions. The radio architecture of nRF52833 SoC with on-chip PA can provide -95dBm RX sensitivity (1Mbps in Bluetooth low energy mode), 8dBm maximum output power and 103dBm overall link budget.

Full-speed (12Mbps) USB operation allows the TSG5162 module to be used in USB-compatible wired peripheral device applications, enabling low-latency and high-bandwidth communication with a range of host devices (such as PCs, smart phones, and gateways). This wireless connection also makes device firmware updates via USB ((DFU)-over-USB) feasible. The nRF52833 SoC has an extended operating temperature range of –40º to 105ºC, suitable for IoT applications in harsh operating environments.

Nordic’s nRF52833 advanced multi-protocol SoC combines a 64MHz, 32-bit Arm®Cortex®M4 processor with a floating point unit (FPU), and a 2.4GHz multi-protocol radio (supports Bluetooth 5.2, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Zigbee, IEEE 802.15.4 and proprietary 2.4GHz RF protocol software). The sufficient memory allocation of this SoC device supports dynamic multi-protocol function, and uniquely realizes concurrent wireless protocol connection. nRF52833 is provided with Nordic’s Bluetooth RF protocol stack S113 or S140 SoftDevice. S140 is a qualified Bluetooth 5.1 stack that includes support for 2 Mbps, long range and CSA #2 support.

Zhao Ruixiang, CEO of Qingyan Technology (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd. said: “By integrating Nordic’s nRF52833 SoC into the module product, it can integrate two high-precision positioning technologies, and can fully meet FiRa’s definition of UWB/ The requirement for Bluetooth low energy to work together. This SoC device has a powerful Arm processor that can handle all UWB’s complex time sequencing and edge processing of positioning and measurement data.”

“Nordic has a good vision for new products and the ability to respond quickly, which is essential for the development of new technologies.”

In addition, the TSG5162 module has been deployed in the new coronavirus social distancing wearable device of Qing Research Institute, which can perform “real-time” ranging between devices, so that users can always maintain an appropriate distance between each other. This bracelet product has been shipped to Europe, North America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East in bulk.

Nordic Semiconductor Asia Pacific Sales and Marketing Director Bjørn Åge (Bob) Brandal said: “With the consumerization of indoor positioning technology, adopters will need accurate positioning data and low power consumption characteristics. By combining Nordic’s Bluetooth low energy technology with Combining UWB into a single SIP module, Qingyanxun’s module products can provide accurate real-time location services (RTLS) and can be used in a variety of terminal products for a long time.”

“In the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, we are very pleased to see that Qing Research has successfully applied this technology to social distancing and contact tracking solutions.
